I've got this morning the weekly newsletter from Rainbow Kids and found this article. I've read this already in other newspapers and indeed it disturbed me a lot! So I wanted to share this with you. Because I feel that we as adoptive parents need to make sure that the right lingo is used between child trafficking and adoption!
There have been recent news reports concerning Rubiana Ali, the child-actress in the Oscar-winning movie, "Slumdog Millionaire", and her father's (Rafiq Qureshi) attempt to sell her to the highest bidder. It is important for adoptive families everywhere to speak-out against the use of the term "Adoption" in reference to this obvious case of child-trafficking. Too many major media outlets are reporting that Rubina's father was trying to "offer her for adoption for a price". We must never allow the very wide line between child-trafficking and adoption to narrow. Offering a child FOR SALE, to make a profit and without regard for the child's well-being, is child trafficking. Thoughtfully and legally placing a child into a loving home for the purpose of bettering that child's life, is adoption. There is a growing wave of anti-adoption sentiment sweeping the world today. As parents and advocates, let us stand ready to correct this misconception whenever it may occur.

How do you feel about this?

I agree 100% with you. It just frustrates me though - as someone who is struggling to fall pregnant, I would love to "rescue" that little girl and get her away from such a father. I am sure that many people feel hurt bu this but we cannot encourage this man.
Yikes!! I did not realize this was going on with this young actress! That is DEFINITELY NOT ADOPTION! That is SELLING your child for a PROFIT!
Thanks for advocating for orphans!
This is beyond disturbing. I can't believe someone could even mention it in the same context as adoption when its the EXACT opposite.
Nothing makes me angrier than when I hear people trying to blur the lines between adoption and child trafficking. Not only is it disrespectful to all of the loving families formed honestly through adoption but it also makes a mockery of all the victims who have suffered horribly at the profit of the child trafficking industry. This is just infuriating!
It's so nuts. And let me just say that people can be rather clueless. I was outside talking to my neighbors daughter who is usually very nice. I mentioned I had to go in cause we were making Indian food and watching Slumdog Millionaire that night. Her response FLOORED me. She said, oh, there's a child for sale for ya! I was so stunned I didn't even know what to say! Was that a bad joke? Did she really think we were "buying" a child? I just mumbled something like "oh, don't say such a thing" and quickly went inside, cursing myself all night for not having a better comeback. People can be so stupid!!!!
Oh, the neighbors daughter is in the 30's, BTW. Not a kid!
I agree with you Jen, people can make such a dumb comments! They just don't think before they say something, and a lot of people don't know anything about adoption or how it really works... SAD!
