My ♥ goes out to Japan

A huge shock for the whole world!

I have a few friends living in Japan, but luckily they are all OK. But my ♥ goes out to all the people who lost their homes, friends and family and who are in the middle of this huge crisis!

I hope they will find the strength and courage to move on and rebuild their lives!

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has said Japan is experiencing its greatest hardships since World War II as it tackles the aftermath of an earthquake, tsunami and a growing nuclear crisis.

The people of Japan will need help for a long time to come. They may have just suffered the worst disaster in their countries existence.

If you like to help, but don't know how? Click on this link and you will find a few organizations that you can support by donations.

Shopping in Incredible India

I went out shopping the other day with my friend Karen, who also writes a wonderful blog, see here was asking me if I would like to buy some Indian outfits for the girls and me?

She mentioned that it might been a good idea for my next Xmas card... and so the idea is born!! I am going on a quest to look for outfits. So I started doing some research and I must admit... a bit confusing. I mean I have heard of Saris, but then I learned that there are:

Salwars - outfits with loose trousers and tight fitting around the ankles
Saris - we know them all, the ones with the draped fabric
Legenga Cholis - seems to me a bit more formal and for weddings
Churidars - informal outfit with pants, either loose or tight

I am not sure if I wrote it down all correctly.... but I am sure my friend Sucharu can help me out to find the perfect outfit for my girls, so we can take some beautiful pictures for our next Xmas card!! But then I also want the matching jewelry, I love the ones they wear in their hair and the bangles of course... oh and the shoes.... so we need to do some shopping Charu!! And for me I like to shop for some cooking/spices/table decoration... in this area... FUN FUN FUN!
Prepare yourself!! LOL

Which ones you like best??
And do you have an Indian outfit??

Have a lovely day,
Mireille

~ Local is Lekker ~

You probably know by now that I really like to cook, but not only cooking, I like to research where food comes from, what the reason is behind that particular dish. How food has evolved, how food in different countries have the the same kind of dishes just using their local ingredients, but the basics are the same. These kind of things intrigue me, I love that part about food and I read a lot of cookbooks, I look at a lot of shows. For me it is not only about cooking a quick dinner to satisfy those hungry bellies... NO there is so much more to it.

And I like to use local produce, luckily that trend is coming up everywhere these days more and more you see farmer's markets, local bakers, butchers are popping up everywhere and I love this kind of shopping. Browsing around on markets, tasting new kind of cheeses, spices... you can say I am a localvore (one who eats food grown locally wherever possible). Although I would like to even MORE explore this here in SA. By drawing from local resources we can reduce our carbon footprints.

And Local = Lekker! (this is a SA expression, but we use it in Holland as well.... lekker = delicious!)

More and more I am going back to our roots and remembering what our grandparents did seems to be the way forward. Those old-fashioned recipes I suddenly crave for, but then in a new way... with a twist. But those flavors were good in the olden days.. honest and pure. That's how I like to cook these days. But you need GOOD ingredients, fresh from the field, straight from the butcher or bakery... not 3 day old from the supermarket which has been on a truck or even worse on a plane to get in my local supermarket.. that is not the way I like to shop. I want local stuff and more and more am I sourcing this out.

Then there is another reason why this should be on all peoples mind: Obesity in children is no longer accepted. Schools and parents are becoming more aware of feeding their young ones correctly.

Food is traditionally about nourishment and a cultural connection. When we cook and eat our food, I try to involve the girls into the food we are eating. Not only do they really want to help me in the kitchen but I am also telling them each time where the dish comes from. Since we are eating very international at home I always tell them this is from so and so country, so your friend so and so eats this kind of food a lot. It gives them a connection with a friend in their class and they get more excited about it, to know and realize that other children eat different foods. It also helps a lot when they think they don't like it before they have even tried it. If they know their friend so and so eats it all the time, it probably will taste good.

Food and everything around is in also an IN thing! Food shows, blogs about food, cooking classes are popping up more and more. People are interested in food around the world, and with the internet you can virtually travel and cook your way around the world! Which is fantastic... I LOVE that part! Before the internet I bought wherever I traveled a new cookbook from that region, but my bookcases are piling out and most of them are still in boxes in my garage these days... a shame really! But now with the internet and just a few clicks away I can find my recipe I am looking for, compare a few sites and voila I have my recipe that I like to make that day.

And for my local friends here in SA who read my blog and also like to find the best produce around, here are a few local suppliers. I know a few of them, but there are others I definitely want to check out! Another project is born :-)

For all those gadget crazy people, I suggest going onto Yuppie chef (www.yuppiechef.co.za). They offer free delivery, on all orders, anywhere in South Africa. Have a wonderful weekend!

Play dates

On Wednesdays the girls have a short day at school, and this is an ideal day for play dates. This week they had Cathlynn over for a play date. She is Dutch as well, so the girls speak Dutch with a mix of English to each other... so funny to hear!

All 3 of them are really into art, so they enjoyed this for a while, but this time they spend so much time going outside and playing in the park... I was so surprised! Because my girls normally are not the outdoorsy types... unfortunately. They are more the kind of reading books and staying inside, but here in SA we have almost always nice weather, so I was hoping that they would enjoy more of the outdoors... but reading is not bad either!!

Cathlynn also stayed over for dinner, but after school I first made a real Dutch treat: poffertjes. Since all 3 girls are Dutch I knew they would appreciate this treat, another kid from another country will maybe not have the taste for it, although it is sweet and like a small pancake.. who doesn't like pancakes?? You need a special pan for it, with small holes where the filling fits right in. And then you sprinkle it with powdered sugar... lots of it!

For dinner I made home made fries, and home made apple sauce because in Holland that goes together! And chicken wings marinated in yogurt overnight... yum yum. I am thinking when I was a child I would get home made fries all the time when I would go to my aunties house...

Maybe I should make Wednesdays the home made fries day. Start a new tradition, what do you think? Do you have certain foods on certain days?? So far I cook almost every week something different but from a kids point of view it is maybe nice to have some traditions?... I am not such a traditional person, but I might change my mind on this one....

Have a good day y'all!

Moroccan Feast or Diffa

I hosted a Moroccan Feast on Tuesday. This I had promised to my girl friends who all gave me a huge casserole/braiser pan for my Bday in Jan. So I planned to make an easy Moroccan chicken with a salad... that was my initial plan. Then as always once I start planning and researching a bit about Moroccan food I ended up with so many dishes:

~ Mint tea with fresh mint leaves to start of and to end the meal with
~ Moroccan chicken with chickpeas & zucchini
~ Lamb tagine with sweet potato
~ Zaalouk (egg plant dip)
~ Hummus with pine nuts on top
~ Yogurt dip with fresh mint and cilantro
~ Pita bread
~ Couscous
~ Green Salad
~ Dessert: Oranges infused with Orange blossom water, served with vanilla frozen yogurt, candied rose petals & pistachios

And instead of the 8-10 girl friends I thought were coming we had a full house that day and I ended up having 12 ladies, one young man, a baby and 2 little ones over for lunch! So much fun! I love these impromptu gatherings, and since I always make enough food it was no problem that a few more ended up at the lunch table. These moments are special to me, having a nice meal and chatting with your friends... what better way can you imagine than spending your time like this!!

The day before I even went out to a Moroccan here in town and bought these cute original glasses and tray, serving mint tea you can only do this way!

Table settings in some Moroccan colors, the deep hues of the reds/purples/blues/greens, it looked so nice!

Baby Gabriel didn't taste our food yet, but he is getting to know the girl friends of his mom Olimpia!

I love these hang-outs with my friends... too bad Tehmina was not there, although she called us from London to say Hi! and we missed her!!

My friend Karen took all these photographs since I had no time to take some myself, thank you Karen, they are great!
This time my husband was even lucky and we all had some left-overs for dinner that evening, although I added some more chicken pieces to the stew and some more couscous.

More events like this to come, because I am thinking of starting to give cooking classes after I come back from India. Got a few requests now and it made me think about it...
This menu will be on the list for sure then, but I have many more themes in my head ;-)

We get together and it is always around food with us... no wonder I have a hard time loosing my pounds I had in mind! LOL
Have a Terrific Thursday!

~ Simple, Chic & Cheap ~

As you might know by now I like to browse the web and find things that are unique, groovy, sassy, swanky, hip, bright, bold & funky that gives you the wiggles & giggles!

From there to here, from here to there, Funky things are everywhere!

Well.... Gary Pepper Vintage is a brand that fits the bill! Unique & quirky with an eclectic sense of style. The creator and brainchild of this website is Australia's Nicole Warne, who is only 22 years old and lives in Sydney. She is one of the top bloggers of the moment and still so new to the scene. She is also the one who you see in all the pictures on her website and blog and has an half-Japanese and half-Korean background. Trendier is NOT possible I guess!! This combination alone of these 2 nationalities made me go and check her out, because we all know that the Japanese and Koreans are the fashionistas of the world!

Well, this cute fashionista who travels the world in style to find unique vintage pieces to sell on her website and blog has an equally trendy and talented boyfriend named Luke who takes all these wonderful photographs of her in these hip clothing she then sells online.... WHAT A LIFE!!

Look at these shoes, aren't they the hippest and coolest you have ever seen?! LOVE, LOVE them!

I think she found a great niche and this will be a blooming business I can tell, wish her all the luck in the world! I LOVE vintage and I know for sure that there are lots and lots of people out there that also LOVE vintage, so I am sure she will do well!! She has a great idea and turned it into a beautiful designed website and blog.

Go and check her out, you will fall in LOVE too! See on all these links here with different interviews for some Q&A with her and some other links about her and GPV. If you like to buy her unique pieces, this is only possible via her Ebay store for now, but she is working to change that soon! You can even become friends with her on Facebook. How cool is that?!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

~ Jamie vs Ginster ~

Last night I made 2 different potato salads; Jamie Oliver's Potato salad that he serves with smoked salmon on one of his shows. It looked really good and the whole concept with the salmon and potato salad I wanted to try.

But I used to live next door to my friend Ginster in Thailand and she used to make this Bavarian potato salad and I remembered that it was always SO good.

So I divided my kilo of boiled young potatoes in 2 batches and tried the dressing from Jamie on one batch and the dressing from Ginster on the other batch. Let it marinate for 2 hours each and served it Jamie's way with the smoked salmon, a creme fraiche and horseradish dip, some rustic bread and a green salad. A wonderful weeknight dinner!

But which potato salad did we like best. Who is the winner??.... drumroll please..... all four of us voted in unison for....

THE BAVARIAN POTATO SALAD FROM MY FRIEND GINSTER!!!! (I know she will be so proud of this, and so happy that I am writing about it, since she reads my blog everyday... Hi Ginster!!)

Shall I share the recipes with you guys and you can try it?? I am sure Ginster will not mind that her recipe is going all over the world now :-)

OK, here they come, the winner first. I think why this is for us a better recipe is that instead of using oil what Jamie does, Ginster's recipe uses chicken or veggie broth, so lighter!

Ginster’s Bavarian Potato Salad
1 kg Potatoes (preferably young ones, then you don’t need to peel)
100 g Bacon
1 large Orion (I used shallots)
25 cl vegetable or chicken broth
salt + pepper
capers + gherkins
fresh dill

Bring potatoes with peel to boil until done. Peel as long as they are hot. Skip this if you have young ones, leave the skin on. Let cool before cutting into slices or just half if they are small. Chop bacon and onion. Sauté separately. Start with bacon until done, without oil. Put bacon into salad bowl. Sauté onion in same pan like bacon add some vegetable or olive oil until starts getting brown tips. Add to salad bowl. Then slice potatoes on top.

Salad dressing:
3 Tbsp vegetable oil or extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
salt & black pepper to taste
pinch of maple syrup
1 cup hot vegetable or chicken broth

Pour salad dressing over the potatoes at least 2 hours before serving.
Add capers and/or gherkins (preferably dill gherkins) and the chopped dill to taste.
Shortly before serving taste if any salt or pepper should be added.

By Ginster Votteler

For JAMIE's wonderful recipe just go to this link HERE.

So in the end, both are winners. Since I used Jamie's concept with the salmon and horseradish cream, but we ate Ginster's potato salad with it and then I added my own touch with the green salad and the rustic bread. I guess our domestic helper Khetho will get Jamie's salad today :-) ... not bad either!! LOL

But then I am busy again cooking a Moroccan Feast for my girl friends... They gave me a huge flame top pan from Emile Henry, a beautiful huge casserole pan or actually they call it braiser that I can use in the oven or on the stove and it has this beautiful fig color, a deep burgundy. So when I got the pan for my Bday, I promised to make a meal for all of them in it.

That is today! I am making a Moroccan feast, more about this later.... I have to cook for 10 hungry girls and one big boy, since my friend Candice will bring her son who studies in the USA but is here in SA at the moment for a short break!! I am sure he can eat a hole in that pan!! LOL

Ciao Bellas, have a good day! And today is INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!! So a perfect day to have the girls over. I wish you all a FANTASTIC DAY!! I am thinking of you my friends overseas!!

Family Fun Day at AISJ

Saturday it was a gorgeous day and we had Family Fun Day at school. It is every year a big event for the children, since there are so many things to see, to do and have fun with all your friends.

(Unfortunately my battery died after only taken 3-4 pictures... but at least this gives you an idea of how it was)

There were rides for the kids, water slides, big blow up castles, climbing and sliding obstacles, face or henna painting. Used book sales for kids and adults, singing and other talent competitions, then all kinds of sales and auctions and one of the biggest auctions are the International Baskets. Each country organizes a basket with goodies from their country and then you can bid on it. Everything inside is donated by the parents and then you can bid on another basket. Stuff from all over the world is inside, so if you are particular interested say in Chili, France, Brazil, USA or Netherlands for example you can bid on that basket. No need to tell that the highest bidder gets the basket... so some times it can get really high if more people are interested in that particular basket. Fun.. Fun... Fun...

And all the money goes to charity! So whatever you spend is for a good cause!! So people don't mind spending on anything... which is nice to see. Everybody is having a good time, the sun is shining galore... it was actually VERY HOT! But you can buy food and drinks and ice creams, so at least you can cool down a bit... Most of the kids were running around in their bathing suits since there were plenty of water slides.

A fun day at a fun school! A big event every year and lots of volenteer work is involved!!
Congrats to all who organized and helped... you did a great job!!

Have a lovely Monday!

Indian Mythology...

is fascinating and when I think about India, I always think about these colorful gods and pictures you see everywhere. The ones I picked out are mostly from Hinduism and the tales are so inspirational. And since my travels to India are coming up soon, I was researching a bit and just wanted to share with you a few pictures and descriptions... not too much just give you a hint and if you like to know more you can always google more...

Ganesha is one of the deities best-known and most widely worshipped in the Hindu pantheon and easy recognizable with its elephant head.

Hanuman is a Hindu deity, an ape-like race of forest-dwellers, Hanuman is an incarnation of the divine and a disciple of Lord Sri Rama in the struggle against the demon king Ravana.

The Garuda is a large mythical bird or bird-like creature that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology.

I picked out only a few that I know well, but here are all the Gods of Indian Mythology, so if you like to know more about this mystical world, the rich stories and fantastic drawings you can google their names....

So what do you think of these pictures, stories and believes? Interesting, boring, colorful, fantastic??
Do you know a lot about mythology? I saw some stories for children about the Indian Mythology and I would love to find a good book for JJ & Jezz about Indian mythology. I think they would like those stories. So another task for me to go and look for :-)

What makes you think?

These are little snippets of life that make you think about your own....

Found on a website: Makes Me Think, so nothing of these below are the ones that I came up with, but made me think... I hope it will makes you think as well. Tell me how you think about it, I like to hear....

Today, I watched three young children meet for the first time on a playground in a local park. They all immediately acted like best friends, playing and laughing hysterically. They made me smile, and then I began to wonder why adults lack the ability to accept each other so easily.

Today, my ex-wife is undergoing surgery to donate one of her kidneys to save my wife’s life.

Today, I tested a theory that didn't work, which led me to different theory that didn't work, which spawned a totally new idea that seems to work really well. Although it doesn't solve the original problem, all of my business partners agree that this idea has earth-shattering potential.

Today, I met a cute white guy at a local bar. In conversation he mentioned that he supports same sex marriages. I politely asked him if he was gay. He chuckled and said, "My mom supported the Civil Rights Movement. Do I look black to you?"

Today, my wife is self-conscious because she's a bit overweight after bearing our two children. But I still can't stop myself from tearing her clothes off.

Today, my daughter confronted me with the fact that my biggest fear, a fear that has held me back from many life experiences, has never come true. I am 76 years old.

Today, I was cleaning the kitchen with my husband in our brand new house. We were joking around and having a great time. It suddenly dawned on me that if two years ago someone had told me my life would end up like this, dealing with those bullies in high school would have been a lot easier.

Today, I won the $500 grand prize in my high school’s annual writing contest for a short story I wrote out of boredom while I was waiting in detention for skipping my sophomore English class.

Today, I went and visited my grandmother and grandfather. My grandmother used to talk down on Hispanic women saying a lot of negative things about them. Now, as she is unable to speak and bound to a wheelchair due to a stroke, a wonderful Hispanic women stays by her side 24/7 to take care of her.

Today, while swimming laps at the pool, I was frustrated to be stuck in a lane with a man who could barely swim. He was soooo darn slow. The whole time I wanted to yell at him for ruining my workout. But after he got out of the pool, I realized he was bound to a wheelchair. I felt horrible.

Today, he ran 3 consecutive red lights and didn’t stop when I put on my patrol car’s lights. I followed him all the way across town to the hospital with the intention of arresting him. He stopped and ran inside, ignoring my calls to surrender. I ran after him, into the emergency room, where his 4-year-old son was bleeding to death after being hit by a car. I said a prayer and walked away.

Today, a complete stranger outside a local coffee shop was holding a sign that said, "Free Hugs." I hesitated at first, but then I decided to give her a hug. Truthfully, it felt great!

So, after reading these, can you think of any special or profound moment in your life? Can you remember a moment that has changed you, your thinking, your behavior? I bet there are moments, think about it and SHARE!!

I will share a moment in MY life: Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

I will never forget this moment when we were adopting JJ & Jezz. Nobody around us thought we would and could adopt the girls. Since there was NO private adoption law in Thailand. "Since how can you just get 2 children from a birth mother and think you can keep them?"
"Just play mother for a while but don't think you will be bringing them home to you in the USA" was what I heard all the time.
"Give them a good time now as long as you are here, but don't hope that you will take them with you outside of this country... it will not happen..". everybody told me.

There was only ONE other person who believed we could do it and that was.... DIRK! And now we are the parents of 2 beautiful girls, just because...

Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying..... we NEVER STOPPED!

A life changing moment which makes me think about the decisions we make each day, and if we would take another route our lives would have been so different today. Share THAT moment with me!! I am sure you will have a GOOD ONE!

Have a FABULOUS Day!

Robin Hood

In the beginning of the month Jasmine had with her 3rd grade class a play, a play about Robin Hood. Each kid in the class had a role in it, and they practiced quite a bit. Made their own clothes or brought something from home. Since the class was studying Medieval Times, this was part of it. So fun!

Robin Hood is a heroic outlaw in English folklore. A highly skilled archer and swordsman, he is known for "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor,"assisted by a group of fellow outlaws known as his "Merry Men."

Traditionally Robin Hood and his men are depicted wearing Lincoln green clothes. The origin of the legend is claimed by some to have stemmed from actual outlaws, or from ballads or tales of outlaws.

Robin Hood became a popular folk figure starting in medieval times continuing through modern literature, films, and television. In the earliest sources Robin Hood is a commoner, but he was often later portrayed as an aristocrat wrongfully dispossessed of his lands and made into an outlaw by an unscrupulous sheriff. The books often had political-cultural undertones, championing Anglo-Saxons as heroes and the Normans (who had conquered England in 1066) as unjust tyrants.

Although my pictures are not that great, I still wanted to share them with you.

Below the whole class, 3D at AISJ Johannesburg.

Some boys were dressed up as trees... some as Robin Hoods helper or better the Merry Men....

Cathlynn was the narrator and some kids were not having a part for the whole time, so they were hiding under the table :-)

Jasmine was a monk, and I have no clue why their were pointing the bow to her... hard to understand sometimes the dialog :-)

Here the brave men all have a drink together, while the trees are having fun :-)

Look how cute, they even made a wood fire :-) And the woods in the background and a door to the Abbey. So inventive these kids!!

Of course the play had an happy ending, and no matter how big or small your kids role was in it, there were proud mommas and pappas!!

A fun way of learning about the medieval times, that is for sure!!
Have a great day, y'all!
